If you believe that all babies deserve the very best nutrition and protection that mother nature can provide and would like to be fully prepared for breastfeeding, then come along to a ABA breastfeeding education class. You and your partner or support person are most welcome. Our courses are designed for expectant and new parents to prepare for the vital days, weeks and months after your baby's birth. Come and enjoy a class early in your pregnancy. Increase your knowledge gained at antenatal classes. The classes are conducted by qualified ABA breastfeeding counsellors.

For an investment of $85 (plus venue costs for some classes), you will enjoy the many benefits of ABA subscription (this is included in the cost )and be much more likely to have a successful breastfeeding relationship all for less than the cost of one month's supply of infant formula. (If you are already an ABA subscriber, the cost for the class is only $20.)

Having a Baby? Have you got questions about Breastfeeding? Come to our relaxed information-packed sessions, for expectant mothers and fathers and learn about the best start you can give your baby.

Although breastfeeding is natural and best for babies and mothers, it doesn't always come easily and is a learned art. Most women given time and support, can and do breastfeed. Our aim is to provide expectant parents with confidence to successfully breastfeed their babies.

Our courses are designed for expectant and new parents to prepare for the vital days, weeks and months after their baby's birth. We encourage parents to attend while pregnant or early after the birth. These sessions aim to expand upon the knowledge gained at antenatal classes, to give up-to-date information and insights into breastfeeding a baby and parenting in the early days.

Designed for expectant parents, these comprehensive workshop-style sessions cover -

• How breastfeeding works and breastmilk is made
• Breast and nipple care including common concerns
• How to breastfeed a new baby
• What to expect from a new baby
• Adjusting to parenthood, the effect of a new baby on the parents relationship & role of the father in breastfeeding
• An introduction to Expressing & Storing Breastmilk and Working and Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding & Parenting Confidence

NEW 3 part program - Breastfeeding & Parenting Confidence consists of a number of antenatal and parenting classes. These will be run by trained volunteer Community Educators and Breastfeeding Counsellors in a relaxed, friendly group environment.

Join other first-time (& second and third-time!) mothers in your local area as you receive the latest breastfeeding and parenting instruction.

The ABA is a registered training organisation. It is supported by health authorities and specialists in infant and child health and nutrition - including a panel of distinguished honorary advisers - so mothers can be guaranteed the latest up-to-date information.

Why Attend?
Australian Research has shown that new mothers wish they had received more preparation for breastfeeding and the early months of parenting prior to the birth of their baby. Attending an Australian Breastfeeding Association Breastfeeding Education Class compliments the knowledge gathered at antenatal classes, and give you the opportunity to:

• Make informed choices about breastfeeding
• Realistically prepare for the changes about to happen in your life
• Discuss questions and concerns you may have about breastfeeding

Frequently Asked Questions:

At what stage of my pregnancy should I attend a class?

Please consider a class during your second trimester - ie between weeks 13 and 24. This is to allow for the mother's comfort and babies who arrive early. Of course, we are also happy to accommodate those further along than this!

Should my partner come too?

Absolutely! They might not be doing the breastfeeding, but can be your major support and it really helps for them to learn everything with you. If your partner is not able to attend, you can bring along a friend or other support person if you wish.

I am having twins! Do you have a special class for me?

While you are welcome at our regular classes, where your special needs can be briefly addressed, we also run classes specifically for parents of multiples every few months - the first of these will be May 16th at the Breastfeeding Centre in Dandenong, from 1pm - 4pm.

My baby is due in the next few weeks. The class I want says it is fully booked! HELP!

Please book early to avoid disappointment as places are limited and classes fill up quickly. We are generally not able to take extra people and do not hold waiting lists for fully booked classes. However, your local group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association may have upcoming meetings you can attend before your baby is due. We also offer a lunch-time meeting every Tuesday at our Breastfeeding Centre in Dandenong, especially for pregnant women.

How much does the class cost?

Our classes are exclusive to new or existing Australian Breastfeeding Association subscribers. The cost of the class is only $20.00, plus subscription if you haven't yet joined.

Unfortunately, we are not currently able to offer the classes in Tasmania. As you may be aware, we do have a lot of other info and resources to help you prepare for breastfeeding. This website is a good place to start, also if you have subscribed to ABA the free book Breastfeeding Naturally answers a lot of common questions. You are also welcome to come along to a local get together, meet counsellors and breastfeeding mums and have a chat. If you aren’t a member, you can still come along as a guest, and meetings are very informal so you can bring any questions you might have. We encourage new mums to come and meet us before having the baby. Please phone or email if you don’t have our current Bulletin and would like a copy mailed or emailed to you. Alternatively, please feel free to phone (you can use the helpline number or use the counsellors’ direct numbers listed on the Bulletin) if you have any particular questions or areas of concern about breastfeeding.

South Australia

Although breastfeeding is natural and best for babies and mothers, it doesn't always come easily and is a learned art. Most women given time and support, can and do breastfeed. Women who are prepared with up-to-date information about breastfeeding are more likely to be able to overcome any difficulties which may lead to the early weaning of their babies. They are also more able to enjoy the breastfeeding relationship with their baby and have more confidence in their ability to breastfeed successfully. Come to our relaxed information-packed sessions, for expectant mothers and fathers and learn about the best start you can give your baby. Our aim is to provide expectant parents with confidence to successfully breastfeed their babies.

Contact with the Australian Breastfeeding Association before your baby arrives can help to ease the transition when you take your baby home.

Classes will be held approximately bi-monthly.

Places are limited so early registration is recommended.

Our classes are exclusive to new or existing Australian Breastfeeding Association subscribers. The cost of the class is only $20.00, plus subscription if you haven't yet joined.

Our courses are designed for expectant and new parents to prepare for the vital days, weeks and months after their baby's birth. We encourage parents to attend while pregnant or early after the birth. These sessions aim to expand upon the knowledge gained at antenatal classes, to give up-to-date information and insights into breastfeeding a baby and parenting in the early days.

Having a Baby? Have you got questions about Breastfeeding? Come to our relaxed information-packed sessions for expectant mothers and their partners.
