Why this matters

Breastfeeding isn’t always easy — but timely support makes all the difference. ABA’s 24/7 Helpline and LiveChat services provide trusted, evidence-based help to thousands of families every year, wherever they are. These services reduce pressure on hospitals, improve breastfeeding outcomes, and empower women with the confidence to continue. They’re a lifeline — and they must be protected.

What women say about Helpline and LiveChat

Everyone I’ve spoken to through the Helpline has been warm, kind, patient and abundantly knowledgeable. I’m forever grateful. — Anna

LiveChat helped me immensely when I was too anxious to speak on the phone. I felt heard and supported. — Sharni

I am very appreciative of the information provided and not only did the volunteer answer my question, but she checked in on how I was going which prompted us to talk about the challenging start to parenting and I received even more help. — Vivienne

I felt heard and supported and left the conversation feeling reassured and confident which made the world of difference because I felt so alone and like I was failing — Renee

The counsellor genuinely wanted to help me like a friend would. — Melanie

I was emotional and stressed and I got off the phone feeling much calmer and like everything would be ok. — Rachel

What are the issues?

  • Short-term funding: ABA currently receives only 12-month funding, making long-term planning impossible.
  • Outdated infrastructure: The digital systems supporting the Helpline and LiveChat are at end-of-life and risk failure.
  • Volunteer sustainability: Without investment in training and support, ABA’s skilled team of volunteers is under strain.
  • Health professional education: ABA’s gold-standard training for midwives, GPs, nurses and allied health workers needs continued support.

What are we asking for?

We’re calling on the Australian Government to approve a 4-year, $14.8 million funding commitment to:

  • Sustain and strengthen the National Breastfeeding Helpline and LiveChat services
  • Upgrade critical telecommunications infrastructure
  • Support and train ABA’s volunteers
  • Expand culturally safe, multilingual access for priority communities
  • Continue delivering accredited breastfeeding education to health professionals
