Welcome to our group
ABA Boroondrara Group offers information and support in our roles as parents. Come along and meet new friends, chat with mothers who have 'been there' and connect with trained breastfeeding volunteers.
It doesn’t matter how old your baby/child is, whether you are breastfeeding or not, if you are not yet a member – you are always welcome.
With the current restrictions on in-person gatherings, many local groups across Australia are running virtual and online get-togethers. You can view our national calendar of events to find a full listing, and attend a group anywhere in Australia.
Where we are
ABA Boroondara encompasses the suburbs within the City of Boroondara (Ashburton, Balwyn, Balwyn North, Camberwell, Canterbury, Deepdene, Glen Iris, Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Kew, Kew East, Mont Albert North, Surrey Hills and Toroonga) along with suburbs Ashwood (Monash), Burwood (Whitehorse/Monash) and Glen Iris (Stonnington).
More about our group
We usually meet in the morning – sometimes at 9.30 and sometimes at 10 – on various days throughout the month. We meet in Ashburton, Hawthorn, Balwyn and Burwood regularly.
We also hold occasional evening dinner get-togethers and other social events which give those who can’t make it to a day-time meeting the opportunity to keep in touch.
With the current restrictions on in-person gatherings we continue to get-together online – click on the calendar tab for details.
We have a diverse range of participants from first time mums and bubs, to mums with bubs and toddlers. and also mums who are no longer breastfeeding. All are welcome to any meeting. Our get-togethers are a place where a wide range of opinions can be expressed and heard in a non-judgemental, non-competitive setting. Your participation and shared experiences will be valued. At some of our meetings we start with a short informal discussion (topics include breastfeeding issues – of course! – and also lots of other parenting matters) leaving plenty of time for morning tea and chat. Don’t worry if you’re running late – we all understand it can be difficult to get out the door on time – if you miss part of the discussion you can catch up over a coffee afterwards.
Diary dates are on the calendar page. (We also email members regular reminders.) You can read more general information about local groups on the ABA VIC Branch your local group page or on the national local group page.
Library (ABA members only)
Books and DVDs are available to borrow free of charge. You can browse through what we have here, and if you are looking to see if we have something specific, you can search the catalogue here. Click on a title to find out if it's in Kate's half (Hawthorn) or Leslie's (Ashburton) and contact them to arrange to borrow!
A selection of items is usually at discussion get-togethers (Ashburton, Glen Iris and Hawthorn). Email our librarians Leslie (Ashburton/Glen Iris) or Kate (Hawthorn) for more details or to arrange collection outside these get-togethers.
For immediate assistance and support with breastfeeding please call the Breastfeeding Helpline 1800 686 268 (24 hours).
At local get-togethers a breastfeeding counsellor (Calida, Janice, Kate, Ruth, Judy, Kristie, Andrea, Jo and Tanya) is usually in attendance to chat about any particular issues you have.
Breast pump hire
More information about hiring a pump locally from ABA is available here.
Facebook Group (ABA members only)
We have a closed Facebook group providing reminders and easy access to the schedule of events. Details are supplied to new members.
Several times a year we are invited to talk to local secondary schools. The talk is usually led by a trained volunteer, who is accompanied by mums and babies who demonstrate breastfeeding and talk a little about their experiences to the students in a relaxed setting. (We send out an email request for mums and bubs beforehand.)
